Commissioning time
Commissioning time is understood as the time of complete execution of the commissioning order.
Brief description
The process of picking, through the expectations specific to each company, is often very complicated and personnel-intensive, which also makes it necessary to spend a lot of time and incur significant costs. In order to work economically under such conditions, it is necessary to analyze picking time.
The picking process can be divided into the following phases:
- Basic time
The base time includes the time required to accept the order, receive information, and, if necessary, receive vehicles and/or containers. It takes approximately 5–10 minutes of picking time and can be reduced accordingly through good work organization (streamlined processes, trained staff, and optimal access).
- Road time
Travel time is the average time between two picking points multiplied by the number of picking points in the order. It accounts for approximately 30 – 50% of the picking time, and can be reduced through measures such as assortment streamlining, inventory reduction, organization based on picking frequency, and electronic route optimization.
- Time of undertaking
This time consists of activities such as reaching, picking up, transporting and putting away. It takes about 5 to 15% of picking time and depends on what height (bottom, top) the goods are at, as well as the form, size, weight of the article.
- Dead time
Dead time accounts for 10–35% of the total picking time and consists of the positioning, searching, reading, switching, and checking activities necessary to complete a picking order. It can be reduced, for example, through information aids and good working conditions, trained staff, and the replacement of picking lists with paperless picking.
