Volumetric weight describes in transportation - as opposed to effective or real weight - a calculation key that not only considers the effective weight of the goods, but also the necessary space requirements to calculate transportation costs.

Brief description
When an oversized pallet is being transported or the goods occupy an above-average amount of space in relation to their effective weight, carriers use a second key to calculate transportation costs - the so-called volumetric weight - in addition to the effective weight.
For this purpose, the dimensions of the goods are determined and the spatial requirements in the means of transport are calculated. This volume is converted by the established calculation key into volumetric weight. If the volumetric weight exceeds the effective weight of the goods, then the former is taken into account when calculating the freight charge. However, if the effective weight is greater, then the latter serves as the basis for the calculation. The exact conversion keys can be found under the term "bulky goods".
