APS systems attempt to supplement the MRP I (Material Requirements Planning) concept and its weaknesses through model-supported planning. There is communication between the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system below using electronic data processing and appropriate interfaces. At the forefront in APS systems is the optimization of the entire system, as opposed to individual ERP systems that seek local optimizations. ASP systems are therefore not stand-alone systems, but only when combined with the ERP system's database do they deliver the desired benefits. Within APS systems, are often used highly elaborate optimization programs, which have huge requirements, regarding computational capabilities and most often, only by reducing critical factors, are computationally feasible.
