Logistics

Logistics means that the "right" goods, in the "right" quantity, of the "right" quality, at the "right" time, in the "right" place, with the "right" and optimal costs, will be made available. The term "integrated materials management" is often used.

Brief description
The term logistics is based on two word particles. On the one hand, on the Greek "logos" or "logicos" (to count, make sense of) and, on the other, on the French "loger" (to arrange, store) and "logis" (Quartier).

Functional logistics includes the following areas:
  • Purchase / procurement / disposition
  • Accumulation of material stocks
  • Production / planning
  • Accumulation of finished goods
  • Shipping/distribution
  • Removal

The result is development, procurement, production, distribution and waste logistics. Environmental management as an important factor should be integrated into logistics management.

The terms Supply Chain Management and logistics are very often used synonymously. Both subject areas aim to create process chains (goods, information, value) while increasing efficiency (customer benefit) and improving profitability (cost-benefit ratio). Supply Chain Management, unlike logistics, is based on the entire institution, that is, it involves all areas of the company in the process of achieving benefits.

Tasks and objectives
The tasks of logistics are:
  • planning,
  • control,
  • carrying out,
  • control
All necessary resources into the areas of procurement, production and distribution.

Features and requirements
  • Generally accepted systems for scheduling orders and materials
  • Flow-oriented rather than function-oriented
  • Reduce the cost of tying up capital
  • Reduce run times
  • Handling parts according to priorities
  • Tailored manufacturing strategy
  • Increased planning certainty through shorter run times
  • Gathering together transport and storage functions
  • General starting point
Application
As areas of application of logistics can be distinguished:

Facilities

Logistics of goods, people and information

Institutions

Corporate, commercial, industrial and transportation logistics as well as special industries.

Features

Logistics of procurement, production, distribution, redistribution and disposal.

Features of procurement logistics include supplier reduction, building a system of suppliers, reducing production lows, and just-in-time delivery.
Production logistics is tasked with planning production processes, coordinating material use, warehouse management, intra-company transportation and outsourcing projects.
Distribution logistics is characterized by the organization of transportation, high delivery reliability, short distribution times and cost reduction.
