Commercial traffic so-called "on the ram" (also called RoLa or "moving road") is a variant of combined transport of goods. In this case, road-moving vehicles (mostly tractor-trailers, semi-trailers and others) or containers are transported by train or inland waterway.
Brief description
In this variant of transportation (piggy-back), entire road vehicles and transport units either by ramp or crane are lifted onto special rail vehicles and transported by rail or by ship. The benefits of this form of transportation lie in relieving road congestion as well as pushing rail and river/sea routes as an alternative to road transportation.
A distinction can be made in this type of transport between accompanied and unaccompanied traffic. In the first option, whole sets are transported, the driver rides along with the vehicle, while in the second option (also referred to as tank traffic) only loading units (semi-trailers, WAB`s, containers) are transported and handled without the company of a motor vehicle.
