A tachograph (also Black Box) describes a device in a vehicle that records data such as driving and rest times, driving breaks, kilometers traveled, as well as vehicle speed.
Brief description
A mechanical tachograph consists of a circular paper disc that rotates clockwise in the tachometer. The stylus moves in it, depending on its speed, closer or further from the pivot point, and records all the data on the dial. A complete rotation of the dial at this corresponds to 24 hours. Among the information that is recorded are driving and resting times, vehicle speed as well as distance traveled. If the dial is completely recorded it is removed from the tachometer and retained for data preservation.
Due to European Union regulations in effect since May 1, 2006, all newly registered vehicles over 3.5 tons and vans with more than nine seats must be equipped with digital tachographs. The digital tachograph records the same data as its mechanical predecessor in a secure memory module, but makes it easier to check whether truck drivers and transport companies are complying with legal regulations. All the data can be read and scanned by inspection services as well as by the company. By using such a system, transport safety can be increased and working conditions improved.
