GS1

The term GS1 (short for Global System, Global Solution and Global Standard) describes a worldwide, unambiguous system for identifying and coding addresses, items, shipped units, benefits, locations, etc. This type of system forms the basis for the electronic exchange of trade data as well as the standardization of message structures and trade processes.

Brief description
GS1 performs as a global organization with the goal of creating globally applicable solutions to increase efficiency and understanding of the value-added chain through all industries and sectors. GS1 identification system and the corresponding barcodes make it possible to electronically process the data of a given general commodity management system.
The GS1 system includes special barcodes (such as EAN-13, EAN-8, GS1-128, ITF-14, GS1 DataBar, etc.), GS1 eCom (electronic data transfer; EDI or XML), GS1 GDSN (global data synchronization network), EPCglobal (application of RFID technology) and back-tracking tools based on the global unique identification number.

Manufacturers and suppliers of consumer goods, transportation and trade units need a GS1 identification number and can convert this number into a machine-readable code (barcode), which can be found on both packaging and external parts, logistics units and other packaging. The carrier on these units is the GS1 machine-readable shipping label.

Rules
The GS1 system is based on the following principles:

- open standards - The goal is an open, practice-oriented integrated system of technical standards for identifying and communicating information that enables globally effective Supply Chain Management in every enterprise and area.
- diversification - The system is based on a rule that, if applied, enables extensive, non-overlapping and unambiguous identification of various data on products, transport units, containers, objects, locations, etc.

- transparency - GS1 standards are used along all supply chains, regardless of who uses, receives or further develops them. They are intended to lead to standardized processes and thus savings in the interest of all stakeholders.

- insignificance - The worldwide unambiguity of the GS1 identification number can only be guaranteed if standard numbers are developed as a whole. Specific characteristics of articles should not be encoded into the numbers themselves, but read out using EAN numbers as access keys from a file or other data source.
