Transportation - Automating the cross-docking process for the transportation of sensitive materials

Customer - logistics company engaged in the transportation of biological materials

Transport of biological materials

Who was the customer?

A logistics company engaged in the transportation of biological materials, including blood, which requires specific temperature conditions and high safety standards. It operates on a cross-docking system, which means that products are not stored in a warehouse, but are quickly sorted and shipped on under strictly controlled conditions.

What customer had an intralogistics problem?

The client faced the challenge of ensuring an uninterrupted cold chain for the transport of blood and other biological materials that require special handling. Problems included:

  • Maintaining a stable temperature - The truck delivering the blood had to be unloaded without breaking the temperature continuity.
  • Safety and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) compliance. - Due to the high value and risk involved in transporting blood, the entire process had to be safe, controlled and in accordance with GMP standards to avoid contamination or damage to materials.
  • Automation and strict product registration: Hand-carrying the materials was not an option due to the need for precise recording, weighing, taping and protection from contact with outside air, which could affect the temperature.

A solution designed by Intralog

Intralog's team developed a specialized solution to maintain temperature continuity and safety in the transportation of blood as part of the cross-docking process. Elements of the solution included:

  • Automatic admission system - The truck with biological materials directly entered a dedicated dock that allowed the goods to be quickly unloaded onto Intralog equipment without exposing the cargo to temperature changes.
  • Automated sorting and wrapping of pallets - The materials were automatically recorded, weighed, wrapped and taped before they went into the -36°C cold room. The robotic solution provided full protection for the goods without the need for manual handling.
  • Safety locks - The process was further protected by special airlocks that guaranteed temperature isolation and eliminated the risk of contamination, which is in accordance with the highest GMP standards.

Results: What did the customer gain by implementing the solution with Intralog?

By using Intralog's advanced solutions, the customer has gained:

  • Unbroken cold chain - materials were transported at controlled temperatures from 5°C all the way down to -36°C without the risk of overheating or temperature breaks.
  • Safe transportation process - Thanks to the use of locks and full automation, the transport of materials took place safely, reducing the risk of exposing the team to extreme temperatures and meeting GMP requirements.
  • Time saving and precise control - The automation of the sorting and registration process allowed for the rapid processing of materials and accurate registration of each container, ensuring full control over the transport of high-value goods.
