Who was the customer?
A customer in the automotive spare parts sector had a multi-level mezzanine where order picking took place in trays.
Customer challenges:
The existing way of handling assumed:
- Manually carrying litter boxes down the stairs - dangerous and time-consuming,
- palletizing and transporting boxes on pallets - forklift operator required and time consuming
- transporting pallets from the highest levels with forklifts, which was risky and required free operating space.
With the rapid increase in the number of orders, the process was no longer efficient and cost-effective requiring more staff to fulfill orders.
The problem was further compounded:
- Time pressure - the solution had to be implemented as soon as possible,
- alternative options - elevators would have required a large investment and design-build process, which the client could not afford
A solution designed by Intralog
We designed and implemented a transport spiral built into the mezzanine structure, enabling the transport of trays from higher floors without interfering with the infrastructure with the option of stopping at individual floors.
Key features:
- Closed, invisible spiral design - hidden in the racking system, does not interfere with the operating space.
- No need to rebuild the hall, build a shaft or strengthen the ground.
- The spiral works by gravity, without maintenance - eliminating the need for forklifts or manual transport.
- Integrated with existing picking system - works without replacing racks or IT systems.
- Much higher throughput than elevators, at a cost of about 20% the price of a driven vertical solution.
