A carrier is defined as a company that actually takes over the physical transportation of goods.
Brief description
Unlike a freight forwarder, who normally only organizes transportation and uses a carrier in the course of these activities, a carrier is a company that performs the actual transportation and puts the means of transportation at its disposal. This applies regardless of what means of transportation are used.
Depending on the mode of transportation, the carrier has its own term, so in sea transportation it is referred to as an expediter, and in air transportation it is called Carrier. In purely road transportation, the carrier mostly acts as a subcontractor to the freight forwarder and rarely takes orders directly from the end customer.
