Air transportation is when goods are transported by transport aircraft or in cargo compartments under the floor in passenger aircraft.
Brief description
The origins of air transport as a commercial mode of transportation took place in the 1950s and 1960s, when the use of airplanes for international cargo transportation began after World War II. This mode of transportation has since recorded the highest percentage of growth in the field of transportation. Through advances in technology, it has become possible to transport larger and heavier goods.
Most often, air transport carries goods where speed plays a big role. These include:
- Live animals, flowers and exotic fruits, newspapers and films
- Fashionable and seasonal goods, most often textiles
- Spare parts, forward shipments
- Particularly valuable goods, sensitive to transport and prone to theft
- Disaster relief
Advantages
- Speed: shortest delivery time among all transportation industries
- Safety: short transportation time, independence from the influence of nature and shocks during handling and transportation
- Reliability: flight plans are often met with up to the minute accuracy
- Higher network density allows for shorter arrivals and departures
Disadvantages
- High transportation costs - dependent on the weight and volume of goods
- Environmental burden of kerosene combustion
