The term CMNI (from French. Convention de Budapest relative au contract de transport de marchandises en navigation interieure) refers to the Budapest Agreement on the Carriage of Goods by Inland Waterways.
Brief description
The regulations of the CMNI Agreement came into force on 01.03.2005 and form the legal rules of international inland waterway transport. The agreement was signed as early as June 22, 2001, as part of the Budapest agreement under the umbrella of the Central Commission for Rhine and Danube Navigation and UN-ECE.
Thanks to CMNI, the hitherto specific and often widely divergent regulations in inland transportation should be abolished. The agreement regulates general points such as the rights and obligations of carriers and other contracting parties, legal transport regulations, the use of proper documentation of goods, as well as liability within inland transportation. The CMNI is thus equivalent to the CMR in road transport and to the CIM in rail transport.
